Truckwash boss shines light on mental health support for HGV drivers

Laura Cardwell, Managing Director of Lymm Truckwash, is hosting a Driver Day in support of a range of mental health charities, including: YoungMinds, The Calm Zone, Andy’s Man Club and Heads Together to raise awareness of supporting HGV drivers’ wellbeing.

On Thursday 29th April, Lymm Truckwash will host a Driver Day for drivers visiting for a wash that day.  The event will include competitions, freebie goodie bags and industry advice to shine a light on support for HGV drivers who spend much of their week alone and have continued to work tirelessly throughout the pandemic.

A study by mental health charity MIND found that 30% of self-reported work-related illness in the transport and logistics industry are due to stress, depression and anxiety. Research also found that many workers do not disclose the real reason for their absence – for instance, 95% of workers calling in sick due to stress give a different reason to their manager.  Additionally, 22% of workers have been diagnosed with a mental ill health, but less than half of those have disclosed this to their manager. *

The role itself can be isolating, with a standard working day often including long hours of intense concentration, strict time constraints, demanding delivery targets and heavy traffic conditions, combined with long periods of time away from family.

It is also documented that three times as many men as women die by suicide and men aged 40-49 have the highest suicide rates in the UK.* Statistics also show that men are less likely to talk about their mental health than women, which can be particularly problematic in male dominated industries such as logistics and transport.

Laura Cardwell, Managing Director of Lymm Truckwash, comments “The pandemic has made lots of people talk more openly about mental health but there is still a long way to go for the logistics industry. Throughout the year we have continued to support drivers with a friendly, welcoming smile and free refreshments. We have also kept our prices the same as 2020 to support our customers. They support us, so it is the least we can do for them.

“We have been overwhelmed by the support from HGV drivers and those in the logistics industry throughout the pandemic and wanted to host this Driver Day to show our thanks and celebrate the start of easing of lockdown restrictions, but also raise awareness of driver wellbeing and mental health.”

The event will be supported by a range of companies including Highways England, D4 Drivers, Radcat, Maple Fleet, Washtec and more.

Alfie from Alfie’s Trucking Photos will also be on site taking photos of all trucks in attendance. Alfie is nine years old and uploads truck photos to his dedicated Facebook page, any money he raises goes straight to YoungMinds, a mental health charity for children. So far, he has raised over £3000 and any photos he takes on the day will be available to drivers after the event.

The Driver Day event will be held outside, with social distancing measures in place, in keeping with restrictions. The day is open to transport managers, company owners and those who work in the industry or associated companies, but due to Covid please RSVP by emailing Laura Cardwell ljc@lymmtruckwash.co.uk

Lymm Truckwash is open Monday to Friday 7am to 5pm, Saturday 7am to 11.30am. To find out more, please visit: https://www.lymmtruckwash.co.uk/

Europe’s Largest Truckwash celebrates essential workers for National Lorry Week

Lymm Truckwash partnered with the Road Haulage Association (RHA) to hold a celebration for National Lorry Week on Thursday 19th November.

National Lorry Week takes place from 16th – 23rd November and celebrates the vital and often-overlooked road transport industry.

On Thursday 19th November, Lymm Truckwash held a Covid-19 compliant open day to celebrate the industry’s ‘HGV Heroes’.  A range of companies, including D4Drivers Certas, RADCat, Washtec, Diomyx, Snap, NaVCIS, TT Club, Goodyear, D-Tec and Maple Fleet supported the event and provided promotional items and industry advice.

Laura Cardwell, Managing Director of Lymm Truckwash, comments “We’re very excited and honoured to have been chosen as the RHA’s member focus for the week. The event was a great way to say thank you to all the essential workers in the logistics industry and provide them with really useful advice during this tough time.”

Laura adds: “We took extra precautions to ensure Covid-19 guidelines were adhered to, including carrying out a risk assessment, displaying track and trace QR codes and employing an events manager to ensure social distancing rules were adhered to. The event took place outside, with restricted numbers and as trucks were getting washed as usual drivers didn’t even need to leave their cabins.”

Lymm Truckwash has remained open throughout the pandemic as an essential service to the supply chain and Laura played a vital part in relaying to the government the facilities that drivers needed.

Laura, comments: “We are not just a truckwash, we offer a warm welcome, support and great service to our drivers.

“We’re so glad we could support National Lorry Week, it’s fantastic opportunity to show our appreciation to the logistic workforce who transport and deliver 98% of our essential goods and have continued to work throughout the pandemic and multiple regional and national lockdowns.

“The event was a great way to celebrate our ‘HGV Heroes’. This year has demonstrated the power of companies coming together and working collaboratively and we’re so grateful for all the support we’ve received this year.”

Laura adds: “I want to say a massive thank you to all of the companies that attended and provided advice and promotional items. This is our first year hosting the event for NLW and we hope to do it again bigger and better next year!”.

RHA chief executive, Richard Burnett comments: “National Lorry Week showcases the vital role the road transport industry plays in our everyday lives and the team at Lymm Truckwash are always supportive of the RHA and the industry as a whole. Laura and the team have played a vital part in helping drivers throughout the year so it was great to see everyone come together to show their appreciation for the logistics industry and essential workers.”

Europe’s largest truckwash opens new £2.3m Cheshire site at Poplar Park, Lymm, WA13 0TD

Lymm Truckwash Ltd – the largest and oldest truck wash in Europe – opened its new purpose-built Cheshire site on Monday 14th October, 100 metres from its previous location. The 52 year old family-owned and managed business has invested £2.3 million in its move to Poplar Park, just 30 seconds off Junction 20 of the M6 and Junction 9 of the M56, near Warrington.

The new Lymm Truckwash offers four commercial vehicle wash systems, providing both a pre-wash and gantry wash in no more than six minutes – three minutes faster than the current site’s washes. The state-of-the-art, bespoke washes and jet wash system have been specially created for the company by WashTec.

The new premises offer a faster and more efficient service thanks to a new payment system that uses automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), so there’s no need for drivers to get out of their cabs. They simply pull up to the HGV-height kiosk and payment takes about 20 seconds (the same methods of payments are still available including; account, credit card, cash, fuel cards, Snap and Twuk). Plus, the more convenient location means drivers no longer have to enter and exit Lymm Services.

Laura Cardwell, managing director of Lymm Truckwash, said: “The excitement among our customers has been amazing. They have shown us great support and encouragement, and are just as excited about the move as we are.

This heralds a new level of service in truck washing, and we’re very happy to be at the forefront and to continue to be Europe’s largest truck wash. There is no other truck wash like this in the whole of Europe for size and technology.”

The whole project has taken three-and-a-half years, including obtaining planning permission, design and construction.

To celebrate the opening, Lymm Truckwash will hold a grand launch event from 26th to 28th of November for customers and suppliers.  There will be refreshments, a tour of the facility and Lymm Truckwash goodies.  To register your interest please email Laura on ljc@lymmtruckwash.co.uk.

Laura added: “This move isn’t only about our customers; it’s also about securing the future of our long-serving and loyal staff, and in turn their families. Plus, the investment benefits the local economy and business community.”

Founded in 1967, Lymm Truckwash washes more than 60,000 trucks a year for customers from the UK and across Europe, ranging from owner-drivers to major fleet operators such as BP, DHL and AW Jenkinson.

As part of the relocation, the company has responded to advice by Highways England to improve driver visibility by cutting back hedges and widening the entrance at the new site.

Customers can follow the company on Twitter: @LymmTruckWash, and on Facebook, both supply regular updates and competitions to win a free wash and other merchandise.

Introducing our new website

This month we are pleased to announce the launch of our new website, created in conjunction with our marketing agency, Plinkfizz, a leader in their industry. Our new logo, branding and website are all down to worthwhile time spent with their staff.

Also, on our Facebook page (Lymm Truckwash), we are giving away a free wash once a month until we open the New Site. If you could encourage your drivers to like the page and enter the pinned competition you could save yourselves a few pounds. We plan to use these Newsletters, website and Facebook to keep you and your drivers informed of the changes at all times.

Please take a look at the new website, and if you have any feedback, we would love to hear it.  Also if you have any questions about the new site or general business enquiries, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Please note that the excellent service we provide will continue at our current site at Lymm Services, until we are ready to open the new facilities in the Autumn of this year, 2019.  Our intentions have always been to ensure a seamless transition.

Our new site it literally 100 metres away on the other side of the A50, it is quicker and easier to get to as our customers will no longer have to enter the services.

At the services roundabout go straight over on the A50, 100 yards and it is the first entrance on the left hand side.  It will be clearly signed from the roundabout. We have also just put up new signs on the entrance.

Our New Site

The opportunity arose for us to purchase our own site back in March 2016 and as everyone in business knows to be the owner instead of a tenant is a dream worth chasing!

After applying for planning permission, with the help from our amazing customers who provided glowing references, planning was granted in October 2017.

We have since been very busy satisfying planning conditions and making sure the site will be the state of the art Truckwash all our customers deserve.

We also went out to tender for our washes and are very pleased to announce that the washes on the new site will be supplied by Washtec UK Ltd.  They are the latest in wash design and along with our 52 years of experience in the HGV washing industry we are confident that our customers will be blown away by the service we can offer on the new site.
